Miller Washington & Kim has a special relationship with Cuba.  Founder and senior associate Tom Miller has traveled to Cuba many times over the last 20 years as General Counsel for the human rights organization, Global Exchange, and as pro bono attorney for “Send A Piana to Havana”, a non-profit organization which teaches piano repair and tuning in Cuba’s National School of Music and donates pianos to Cuba’s schools and churches.

In the United States he devotes considerable time to defending, pro bono, U.S. citizens being prosecuted by the U.S. Treasury for violating the travel ban, and working for the lifting of the ban as well as the U.S. embargo against Cuba.  He was also one of the organizers of the largest academic conference on Cuba, “Dialogue with Cuba” sponsored by the University of California, and has organized research trips to Cuba for the Haas School of Business at the University of California.

In 2009 he arranged benefit concerts in Havana and New York City for “Send A Piana to Havana” by world renowned concert pianist Idil Biret, who played with Cuba’s outstanding Orquesta Filharmónica Nacional de Cuba. He is currently working on a proposal to develop a Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Havana.

He also heads the “Fair Trade with Cuba” committee, which was organized to assist in the development of business relations with Cuba, and he is affiliated with the only foreign law firm authorized by the Cuban Government to have offices in Cuba.
